Our Story

Enjoy what you do and let it shine

Have you ever wondered why you turn your head to look at something interesting? You have wanted something, and then there it is before your eyes. Landscapes can pull you in. The natural beauty of both hard and soft material blends together. Through years of experience, we have developed many living environments. Not only are these landscapes that engulf you 3D, but they are also timeless. There is a joy to coming home and saying, “This is my place.” There is no need to escape to relax. A good landscape is an investment, not some far off oasis. Do it right the first time. I recommend being a little patient and taking a year to live in your residence to understand some of the conditions or ideas that might come up before starting. More than likely, a scale drawing will be required to establish a budget. I often suggest that your landscape should be prepared a minimum of a season before construction.

The type of materials can make all the difference. I prefer natural stone. It is timeless, and the beauty of touching craftsmanship is invigorating. The hardscape should give a bold statement, but the planting is like gravy. It softens the project and gives it flavour. Picking the right plants to fit the condition can make all the difference. We try to keep up to date with current changes, yet we strive for our legacy. I try and give the right mix; plantings should not look all the same. Ideal Garden Concepts’ landscapes are not cookie-cutter; they are unique.

We have served the Burlington community as Ideal Garden Concept for over twenty-five years. My parents Albert and Maria Kenel, established Ideal Gardening in 1960. The business is still a small family firm that has continued to grow through our clients. You may wonder why I ask new customers if they have seen our work. To give my clients the attention they deserve, I cannot chase everyone. Yes, I may be a few nickels more, but I stand behind my work. My customers get to know me as David. I can walk across my client’s yards and inspect their gardens to see how they match up with my expectations over the years. I grew up in this family business, starting in diapers and will likely finish in them too. As a child, I was often entertained by tagging along with my father. He taught me good work ethics; to be proud of my work. At an early age, I decided to follow in his footsteps. I graduated from Humber College as a landscape technician. After ten years in my father’s business, I knew it was time to stand on my own feet. It is a very rewarding industry. It’s very gratifying to get up in the morning and know that this beautiful community surrounds me. I can drive across town and see my work alive and well!
